As anyone with even the most passing interest in equine matters will be aware, the Kerrygold Horse Show kicks off in the RDS today.

The annual event is expected to attract over 1,600 horses and ponies and countless thousands of two-legged admirers over the next five days.

The centrepiece of today's show, apart from the trade stands and arts and crafts on display, will be the Kerrygold Speed Stakes, an international showjumping must for fans.

According to Mr Gerry McAuliffe, show director, this year's Horse Show is expected to attract huge numbers of horse lovers whose activities were severely curtailed during the recent foot-and-mouth crisis.
