Twelve adults and a baby were rescued from a serious fire in a ground floor of an apartment block in Waterford City this morning.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 5.45am and evacuated a number of people by ladder from windows at the front of the building.

A number of others were rescued from a fire escape at the rear of the building and from an apartment at the ground floor.

The blaze caused extensive fire damage to the ground floor and smoke damage to the upstairs area.

Six people were taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where they are being treated for smoke inhalation.
