The two teenagers killed in a crash outside Ballina, Co Mayo, early yesterday were back seat passengers flung out of the car when the vehicle hit a pole.

They were named as Mr Maurice McDonagh (18), of Creggs Road, Ballina, a student at the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Gortnor Abbey, Crossmolina, and Ms Karen Heaw (17), Corballa Post Office, Ballina, a student at the Convent of Jesus and Mary Enniscrone, Co Sligo.

Gardai confirmed they were travelling into Ballina, having attended a pre-graduation function in Crossmolina.

The driver of the Toyota Carina, Mr Stephen Murphy (17), Bunree, Ballina, a student at St Muredach's College, Ballina, was said to be improving at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, yesterday.

A front seat passenger, Ms Eithne McDonnell, Bellacorick, Ballina, was not injured.

Mr McDonagh was a prominent member of the Grainne Uaile sub aqua and the Moy canoe clubs. Ms Healy was prominent in the Castleconnor pantomime and drama groups.
