A teenager who was doing handbrake turns in a stolen BMW and wrote it off late in the afternoon in a housing estate has paid €400 compensation.

Noting the value of the car, Judge James McDonnell said to Stephen McGuirk’s solicitor, Michael Hennessy, “€400, that’s out of €40,000. I know this is the season of Santa Claus but I didn’t think it was the season of the tooth fairy.”

The court heard that McGuirk was driving the stolen car in Rossfield Drive, Tallaght, Dublin, at 5pm on February 13th.

The court had heard that the owner had bought the car for €70,000.

Although the BMW was now worth between €35,000 to €40,000, he had only received €19,000 from the insurance company.
