Teacher to chair council of unions

A teacher has been elected chairman of the Dublin Council of Trade Unions for the first time in the council's history.

A teacher has been elected chairman of the Dublin Council of Trade Unions for the first time in the council's history.

Mr John Carr, of Clontarf, Dublin, succeeds Mr Niall Irwin from the plasterer's union OPASTI. The council is among the oldest co ordinating bodies in the trade union movement.

It is responsible for the annual May day parade in Dublin and the annual commemoration and march to the grave of James Connolly.
