Colombo - Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels launched fresh attacks against thousands of troops defending the northern peninsula of Jaffna yesterday, a day after 34 people were killed in fighting, officials said.

Heavy fighting raged in the Pallai area of the peninsula as the military tried to keep the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) from advancing into Jaffna, military sources said.

The LTTE has been stepping up pressure on the Jaffna peninsula since Saturday's fall of the strategic base of Elephant Pass.
