Ugandan opposition candidate Kizza Besigye has a small lead over President Yoweri Museveni in early counting from Thursday's election, a media tally centre said today.

The count, by KFM radio and the Daily Monitornewspaper, gave Mr Besigye 48.5 perc ent to 47.5 per cent for Mr Museveni, based on 483,000 votes in the presidential election.

Although the figures came from 49 of Uganda's 69 districts, they were likely to be from urban areas where Mr Besigye's support was strongest, analysts said.

The Electoral Commission has issued no official results. There are 10.4 million registered voters in Uganda.
