Award-winning broadcaster David Dunseith has died, the BBC has announced.

The veteran Radio Ulster journalist had retired earlier this year after a 40-year career behind the microphone.

Best known for hosting the station's lunchtime Talkback programme, which he presided over for 20 years, the Derry man served as a policeman before embarking on a career change in the 1970s.

He had been unwell for some time.

Last year his wife and fellow journalist Roisin died after a long battle with motor neurone disease.

Before joining the BBC, Dunseith worked for Ulster Television as a news anchor.

Talkback won the prestigious Sony gold award when he was host and he was also named local broadcaster of the year at the Sonys.
