Syria dismisses threat of American sanctions

Syria said today that US threats of further sanctions would not force it to change its policies in the Middle East.

Syria said today that US threats of further sanctions would not force it to change its policies in the Middle East.

"Syria is sticking to its national stances and its sincere and right policies toward... the region, and its rejection of occupation, domination and aggression," state radio said.

It said Damascus was unconcerned by media reports that US President George W. Bush planned to impose sanctions on Syria soon, saying this showed a "malfunction in the US compass".
