A MAN in his 20s was being held by gardaí last evening in connection with an attack on an elderly man in Charlestown, Co Mayo.

The victim, who was recovering at Mayo General Hospital last night, lives at Park View, Charlestown. He is in his 60s, single, and lives alone.

He awoke to find an intruder in his home early on Sunday. Robbery is believed to have been the motive for the attack.

A suspect was arrested in Charlestown yesterday morning and was being held at Swinford Garda station last evening under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Separately, the 24-year old man who died from multiple stab wounds following an attack in Kiltimagh, Co Mayo, in the early hours of Wednesday last is to be laid to rest in his native Ballyheane, near Castlebar, today.

Frankie Heneghan’s funeral will take place following Mass at midday in Ballyheane Church. A 23-year-old man has been charged with his murder and is next due to appear in court in early September.
