Local authorities throughout the State are being urged to support a call by South Dublin County Council for a Government ban on sex chat phone lines.

The resolution also calls on publishers to refuse advertisements for the chat lines.

Ms Therese Ridge, chairperson of South Dublin County Council, said yesterday: "Publishers which rightly condemn low standards in high places should stop making their own contribution to sleaze by promoting these chat lines in Ireland."
