A suicide car bomber killed three civilians today in southern Afghanistan, a provincial police official said.

The attack in Arghandab district of Kandahar province comes during the bloodiest phase in a Taliban-led insurgency since US-led coalition forces overthrew the militants' radical Islamic government in late 2001.

"It was a suicide car raid and apart from assailant, three civilians riding a motorbike have also been killed," Arghandab police chief Zemarai Khan said.

He did not have further details of the incident which happened on a road often used by Afghan and coalition forces.

Militants have carried out a series of suicide raids against coalition and Afghan troops this year, and on Thursday a suicide car bomber was killed close to a base used by U.S. troops serving with the NATO mission in the western province of Farah.

There were no other casualties in that incident.
