A suspected suicide bomber killed 17 people and wounded dozens more after explosives strapped to his body went off in a bazaar in southern Afghanistan today.

At least 47 people were wounded in the attack in Lashkar Gah, provincial capital of Helmand province in the Taliban's southern heartland.

The head of the city's emergency hospital said the victims were all civilians and included children.
