Successor to Dole elected

WASHINGTON - Senator Trent Lott (54), a southern conservative, was elected in the US Senate yesterday to replace Mr Bob Dole, the Republican presidential candidate, as leader of the chamber's majority, putting both houses of Congress into the hands of the right wing of the Republican party.
