Beirut - About 4,000 Lebanese defied a ban on demonstrations yesterday to condemn the government's proposed budget and demand an increase in the university allocation, in the largest public protest in Beirut since 1991.

The noisy demonstration, originally called by the pro-Syrian Amal movement but later dominated by left-wing university students, was held outside the parliament building as deputies debated the budget.
