The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) will today kick off its annual sexual health awareness week by giving away 60,000 free condoms.

Shag (Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance Week) packs will be given away to tens of thousands of third-level students in the union's bid to promote safer sexual habits among young people.

As well as free condoms, each pack contains information and guidance on practising safer sex and listings for reproductive and sexual health services and STI (sexually transmitted infection) clinics.

USI President Hamidreza Khodabakhshi said: "Shag Week is tremendously well supported every year. It is buoyed by the enthusiasm of students to find out what they need to know to avoid an unplanned pregnancy, and stay safe from sexually transmitted infections."
