More than 1,200 students in Carlow Regional Technical College walked out yesterday and placed pickets on its gates in protest at inadequate facilities and the delay in appointing lecturers to a number of courses.

The president of the college's students' union, Mr Damien Keogh, said that students had been time tabled for rooms which did not exist and that no lecturers had been appointed to courses in services and technology.

He also said that the college was so overcrowded that there was only one library seat for every 24 students.
