A student who had to abandon her hopes of becoming a doctor after suffering brain damage in a road crash was awarded £700,000 damages in the High Court in Belfast yesterday.

Ms Miriam Quinn, now aged 25, from Beechmount Park, Tempo Road, Enniskillen, was a second-year medical student at Queen's University when the crash occurred five years ago.

The driver of the other car was killed and the out-of-court settlement was against the administrator of his estate.
