A Canadian student accused of attacking a French doctor in Dublin’s Temple Bar has been allowed to return on bail to his home in Quebec.

Mr Justice George Birmingham in the High Court yesterday granted Simon Mercier (23) leave to return home to continue his studies while awaiting trial in Ireland.

Mr Mercier is accused of assault causing harm to Guillaume Osterstock (26) in the early hours of August 14th last. Mr Osterstock sustained a serious head injury and was treated in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin.

Mr Mercier’s defence lawyer had submitted it

was a case of self-defence.

Mr Justice Birmingham allowed Mr Mercier to return to Canada on his own bail bond of €50,000.
