A Malaysian student caught working illegally in a Chinese restaurant appeared in Dublin District Court yesterday charged under the Aliens Act. Mr Chiew Keng Yaw (20), North Brunswick Street, Dublin, admitted working without a permit in the Mandarin Castle, Castleknock, Co Dublin, on April 30th.

Defence solicitor, Mr Peter Mullan, said Mr Chiew had completed accountancy exams at DIT and wanted to extend his study permit. Judge Desmond Hogan: "I am not going to stand in the way of him working to tide himself over - it's what students are doing all over the world." But he said he wanted the defendant to regularise his position and remanded him on bail to appear again on November 6th.
