PARIS - The British Defence Secretary, Mr Michael Portillo, called on Europe yesterday to consolidate its fragmented defence industry and pledged London's backing for cross border moves aimed at boosting competitiveness. The arms industry in Britain and France employs 500,000 people and generated exports of £9 1/2 billion a year, Mr Portillo told a high level defence seminar in Paris.
