Lille - The northern French towns of Lille and Dunkirk were brought to a halt yesterday by a strike by public transport employees protesting at safety conditions.

In Lille, the strike affecting buses, metros and tramways was expected to end Tuesday today after city officials agreed to have anti-riot police monitor the public transport network. However, union officials said that drivers would boycott highrisk zones in the event of a problem.
