French prosecutors have shelved an investigation into allegations that former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn took part in a gang rape in the United States.

The public prosecution service said it had taken the decision after a young woman retracted an allegation against Mr Strauss-Kahn (63), who is also fighting accusations of sexual misdemeanour in France and a civil case in the United States.

The Belgian woman who was supposed to have been the victim wrote to French police in August to say she had consented to sex acts and was not pressing any charges, the prosecutor’s office in Lille said.

Mr Strauss-Kahn had denied any criminal wrongdoing.
