Srinagar - The state assembly in Indian-controlled Kashmir witnessed a stormy start yesterday to a week-long debate on greater autonomy.

The plan is backed by Kashmir's ruling National Conference party, which wants full autonomy for the Muslim-majority state, except in matters related to finance, defence and communications.

Opposition state legislators walked out in protest at the conference proposals, which they see as a first step towards total secession from India.
