Fire chiefs in Co Derry have urged parents to control their children after youths as young as 14 pelted crews with stones and bottles.

Officers were targeted as they battled with two separate fires in Somerset Drive, Coleraine last night.

One engine was damaged in the attacks, but none of the firefighters were injured.

Divisional officer Mr John Smith said: "When the fire brigade responds to incidents, they are responding to a call for help from the general public.

"We don't feel it's fair that our personnel should be put at risk when they are responding to help someone else."
