A MAN in his 30’s was involved in an armed standoff with gardaí in Waterford city last night.

Armed support units were called to Waterford city after a man began the standoff on top of his apartment building at about 5.30pm.

The Garda press office could only confirm that an incident was taking place at the building.

It is understood that the man barricaded himself into the apartment and then made his way to the roof, waving the gun.

All of the streets surrounding Penrose Lane, in a perimeter from the quay, Thomas Hill, Bridge Street and The Glen, were cordoned off while gardaí evacuated residents from many of the apartments in the street.

Gardaí were drafted in from county Waterford and surrounding counties such as Wexford and Kilkenny.

Large numbers of locals gathered close to the scene, while the siege continued late into last night.
