Pornocopia: Porn, Sex, Technology and Desire, by Laurence O'Toole
It is neither fashionable nor profitable to argue in favour of pornography, but in this witty and well-researched volume, Laurence O'Toole (an unlikely name for a porn supporter, it must be admitted) does just that. Having examined the feminist arguments against, in a chapter entitled "The porn wars", he goes on to examine the actual situation with regard to pornography in Britain and the US, as opposed to the "guesswork, hearsay and fabrication" which is usually trotted out on the subject, before setting out on a critical trot through the classic porn film files. He also sits in on a film set, and eavesdrops on a pair of cyberlovers. It's a courageous position and will, with any luck, stimulate a debate in what has, until now, been territory firmly fenced in by political correctness.
