The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) has criticised the Government for rejecting a recommendation to scrap the 9 per cent stamp duty on investment property.
The NYCI said the rejection of the recommendation, contained in the Report on the Commission on Rented Sector, would undermine the whole process. Stamp duty should be abolished because it would discourage investment in the property market and reduce the supply of rented accommodation for young people.
The NYCI warned that the situation facing young people in the rented sector was bad and getting worse.
