A sports coach admitted yesterday that he sexually abused girls he was training during the period 1976 to 1992. The 51-year-old man, who cannot be named, was remanded on bail to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court again on January 29th.

He originally faced 90 charges and pleaded guilty to 29 relating to 12 girls. The offences include having unlawful carnal knowledge of girls under 15, sexual assault and indecent assault.

Mr Patrick McCarthy SC, prosecuting, indicated that the victims wanted the defendant named in the media. The defence was granted an order banning publication of his name until the sentencing hearing.
