MADRID - A sergeant major in the Spanish army turned his gun on a young corporal and shot him dead after the soldier refused an order to shoot him, the Defence Ministry said yesterday.

According to reports, Sgt Maj Juan Carlos Miravete on Saturday handed his gun to Cpl Samuel Ferrer (19) and ordered the soldier to shoot him. When he refused, the sergeant major grabbed the gun and shot Cpl Ferrer in the chest.
