Moscow - Russian and Ukrainian nuclear authorities said yesterday that technical problems had forced them to shut down reactors at two power plants at the weekend, adding there was no danger to the public.

Russia's Rosenergoatom nuclear power operator said the second reactor at a plant in the western city of Smolensk was closed on Saturday evening after a drop in water output there. In Ukraine, nuclear power company Energoatom said officials had shut down reactor number one at the country's biggest plant, Zaporishska, following a short circuit in the reactor's electricity generator.
