An explosion during training at a Turkish army barracks in the southern province of Hatay killed a soldier and injured eight others today, Turkish media reported.

A hand grenade caused the accident at the military zone north of the town of Antakya, close to Turkey's border with Syria, they added.

Broadcaster CNN Turk said the injured soldiers had been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Turkey's military is engaged in a conflict in southeast Turkey with guerrillas from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Around 40,000 people have been killed in fighting between the PKK and the military since 1984, when the PKK took up arms with the aim of establishing an ethnic homeland in southeast Turkey.
