A soldier is in intensive care following a shooting accident in the Glen of Imaal last night.

Private Francis Carolan (19), from Artane in Dublin, was hurt during night operations exercises with the 2nd Infantry Battalion, Cathal Brugha Barracks at the Co Wicklow training base.

According to an Army spokesman, he was injured when a number of live rounds were accidentally fired at around 11.30 last night. He received medical treatment at the scene, but was then rushed to Tallaght Hospital.

He underwent emergency surgery and is now under observation in the Intensive Care Unit. The exact extent of Private Carolan’s injuries were not disclosed, apart from the fact he did not lose consciousness.

A full military investigation into the incident is now underway, and the Army training area has been sealed off.
