A 22-year-old soldier has died after shooting himself in the head at Custume Barracks, in Athlone, Co Westmeath. The soldier, from Co Mayo, was said to have been cleaning his rifle when there was a single shot.
The name of the soldier who died was given last night as Pte Robert McKnight.
