Lipstick, powder, paint and a lot of hairspray won through in flamboyant style at the sixth annual Alternative Miss Ireland contest, staged at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin last night, writes Kitty Holland.
Among the 13 contestants were Miss Elizabeth Taylor Trash, Miss Surely Bassey and Miss Elizabeth H'ardon. However, the event - sponsored by Smirnoff - had a serious edge. It was organised to raise money for Cairde, a charity dedicated to supporting children and adults affected by HIV and AIDS.
