Six western islands to get electricity supply

Six more islands off the west and northwest coast will receive electricity within eighteen months, it was announced today.

Speaking as Inis Treabhair off the Galway coast was connected to the national grid today, Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, Ms Mary Coughlan said £650,000 has been allocated for the plan.

She added a total of 14 islands had been targeted for connection to the national grid under the present scheme.

The seven houses on Inis Treabhair are used by permanent and summer residents.

The six islands due to receive electricity are; Turbot, Inishturk South, Inis Mhic Cionnaith, Islandmore in Clewbay, Gola Island and Foynes Island.
