Six rescued off Galway coast

A life boat from Clifden Co Galway today rescued 6 people from a capsized currach off the Galway coast.

A life boat from Clifden Co Galway today rescued 6 people from a capsized currach off the Galway coast.

A passer-by alerted Malin Head Coast Guard to 8 people in the water beside the capsized small black currach.

While two of the people managed to scramble ashore, the Clifden life boat had to bring the other six to Clifden pier where an ambulance was waiting to take them to Galway Regional Hospital.

Two of the rescued persons are said to be suffering from hypothermia.

A helicopter from Shannon also assisted in the rescue.

The currach is believed to have departed from Inisturk.
