Six people, five of them children, have died in an apartment fire in a Stockholm suburb, police said today.

Two people were also injured in the fire, which started late last night in an apartment in Rinkeby, an immigrant suburb of the Swedish capital. Police say the victims were found in a stairwell in the building.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear but investigators said they believe it was an accident.

Police said the victims were five girls ranging from a baby to a girl in her teens, and a woman in her 40s. They didn’t release any other details.

Rescuers said the fire was limited to one apartment, but other apartments in the five-floor building sustained smoke and water damage.
