Site for North's police college to be unveiled

The site for Northern Ireland's new £80 million police college will be selected today.

The site for Northern Ireland's new £80 million police college will be selected today.

Members of the Policing Board will decide on the siting - with Cookstown, Co Tyrone, favourite to come out on top from a shortlist of three.  Other venues on the list are Nutts Corner and Crumlin, both in Co Antrim.

Police chiefs have endorsed plans to build the state-of-the-art complex beside the Loughry Agricultural College in Cookstown.  Sources have confirmed a plot of up to 90 acres has been chosen as the best option.

Business and civic leaders in the Mid Ulster town are stunned that the area has emerged as the favoured option for facilities to train chief constable Hugh Orde's recruits.

As well as training hundreds of fledgling Police Service of Northern Ireland officers, siting the college would also provide a massive economic boost for the area.
