SIPTU is to seek an all out picket against the Institute of Action and Research on Work and Employment (IAWRE), which provides places for 1,000 unemployed people in 159 pilot projects funded by the Government. SIPTU members have been on strike for the past week over the dismissal of a colleague.

Only eight SIPTU members are employed by the IAWRE, which was set up on the initiative of the Conference of Religious of Ireland. However, it is also the main union in the state training agency FAS, which provides important supports to the institute.

If the all out picket is granted it could seriously disrupt IAWRE schemes.

The application is to be heard early next week and, as only one union is involved, it is likely to be granted quickly.
