Santiago - Four gunmen ended a five-hour standoff at a supermarket by freeing their three remaining hostages, wounding themselves and then surrendering, a Chilean police chief said yesterday.

The gunmen took the hostages late on Thursday after a failed robbery at a supermarket but freed them after being assured they would be placed under judicial custody, according to the metropolitan police operations chief, Mr Ivan Flores.
