At least two shots were fired today during an armed robbery on a security van in Lucan, Co Dublin.

Security staff were delivering cash to an ATM at Hillcrest Shopping Centre shortly after noon when they were approached by four masked men.

One of the men was armed with a handgun, and the raiders escaped with a "substantial" amount of cash in a silver BMW after firing a number of shots, a Garda the spokesman said.

He said there were no injuries and appealed for witnesses to contact Lucan Garda station.

Dublin Mid West Fianna Fáil TD John Curran said it was the third reported shooting in the area in two weeks.

Deputy Curran called on anyone who may have witnessed the crime to contact gardaí.

"This is the third reported shooting in Dublin Mid West in the space of two weeks and I am very concerned for the safety of innocent local people. Luckily today there were no injuries and I am appealing to witnesses to contact Lucan Garda Station," he said.
