The shortlist for the 1997 Booker prize will be announced today after a meeting of this year's judges. The shortlisted candidates will have to wait a further month before learning if they have won the prize on October 14th.
The 1997 judges are led by Prof Gillian Beer of Clare College, Cambridge. She will be working with novelist and critic, Rachel Billington; London Times journalist Jason Cowley; literary editor of the Independent on Sunday, Jan Dalley; and Dan Jacobson, novelist and professor at University College London.
