London - Britain yesterday announced a major reordering of its £2.3 billion aid programme, abolishing a controversial scheme that helps British firms in favour of an all-out assault on poverty.

Abandoning the £73 million aid and trade programme (ATP) is the centrepiece of a policy paper on development, the first by a British government for 22 years, drawn up by the International Development Secretary, Ms Clare Short.
