In any region, chat up wine merchants and restaurateurs for details of the best local producers, rather than taking pot-luck at the supermarket. Try some of their recommendations, then phone the properties whose wines please you most and ask if you can visit. After a degustation, the usual form is to buy at least a bottle or two (unless you absolutely hate all the wines - unlikely if they're from a respected source). It's the most pleasant form of shopping I know.
