AN Bord Pleanala yesterday gave the goahead to the development of a controversial £3 million shopping centre in Galway's fastest growing suburb. The centre, planned by businessman Mr Pat Joyce for a four acre site in Knocknacarra, had been opposed by some local residents and business people.

Mr Joyce appealed against a decision by the elected members of Galway Corporation not to allow the project to go ahead, after it was approved by local authority officials.

While the appeals board refused permission for the construction of three houses and a filling station, virtually the entire project was given the green light.
