The Irish cricket team last night recorded one of the biggest shocks in world cup history with a stunning three-wicket victory over Pakistan in Jamaica.

The party started for thousands of Irish supporters in the stands when skipper Trent Johnston eventually finished the game with a six after a tense closing session.

Irish wicket keeper  Niall O'Brien was the hero of the day after he held the side together with a gutsy 72 before being stumped.

The result ends Pakistan's chances of making it beyond the group stages after their opening-day defeat to the West Indies and should see Ireland's part-time cricketers through to the last eight.

Boyd Rankin and Andre Botha had earlier starred for Ireland in the field as they dismissed Pakistan for 132 - with the target eventually downgraded to 128.
