LONDON - The number of women having abortions in England and Wales jumped sharply earlier this year after a health scare over contraceptive pills in October 1995, official figures showed yesterday.

Abortions performed in the first quarter of 1996 rose by 6.7 per cent to 42,990, according to the Office for National Statistics.
