SHANNON-BASED pharmaceutical firm Schwarz Pharma yesterday announced a loss of 55 jobs arising from a global restructuring of its parent company, the UCB Group.

According to a statement, Schwarz Pharma expects the voluntary redundancy programme to be complete by the end of March next.

The rationalisation at the Shannon plant will leave 156 posts. Established in the Shannon Free Zone since 1976, Schwarz Pharma manufactures products for cardiovascular disease and incontinence, and more recently has launched Neupro for the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Schwarz Pharma recently completed an investment programme on site in excess of €150 million in its manufacturing and infrastructure facilities. The UCB Group employs 10,000 in more than 400 countries.
