A Sinn Fein councillor was awarded £10,000 compensation yesterday after his thumb was fractured during a confrontation with RUC officers.

Mr James McCarry, a member of Moyle District Council, Co Antrim, sued the Chief constable for assault and battery.

The claim before Belfast County Court arose from an incident in March, 1993, when Mr McCarry (46), from Ballycastle, Co Antrim, was driving to a funeral.
